o    1876: Melville Bissell patented the carpet sweeper.

o    1976: President Gerald Ford signed a bill posthumously making George Washington a 6-star general, the highest ever U.S. military rank.

o    1997: Holly, Colorado, designated the school crossing guard to handle emergencies after the town marshal and his deputy resigned and another deputy was fired. It worked out okay. In six weeks, the community of 900 had only one emergency when somebody stole the trash can at the car wash.

Guitar Praise - PC Guitar Game Review

Fans of faith based music finally get their own Guitar Hero and get to rock out to their favorite songs with Guitar Praise.  Guitar Hero sorely lacks in this area as it has no content directed towards this large group of music fans.

Guitar Praise is the latest game from a small software developer called Digital Praise.  It is basically a Christian version of popular music games like Guitar Hero and Rockband.  Digital Praise is well known for a computer dance game called Dance Praise 2 as well as a host of other games including VeggieTales and Adventure in Odyssey based games.

Phil Joel Unleashes 'The New Normal' This Week

Phil Joel unleashes “The New Normal” this week, his fifth solo project and follow up to 2006's “Deliberate People” CD.  Offered for free or whatever fans can afford via www.philjoel.com.

It's been a year and a half since Joel left the Newsboys and a time that has seen him garner his first Dove nomination for his 'deliberateKids' CD,  and now the release of his most recent and highly anticipated solo album 'The New Normal'.  True to Joel’s previous music endeavors,  the sound is melodic and full of catchy hooks, the production is rich and textured, and yet still manages to project a simplicity which suits the impassioned lyrics Joel has come to be known for.

Casting Crowns Headline Multi-Group Christmas Tour

Grammy winning, multi-platinum recording artists Casting Crowns, who sold 450,000 tickets in more than 80 cities during its last outing, will headline the 14-city “Casting Crowns Christmas Celebration” with a full orchestra and choir touring this November and December, performing songs from their first and highly anticipated Christmas Album, Peace On Earth. The tour will feature special guest Natalie Grant, Denver & The Mile High Orchestra, Avalon, Michael English and new music from Radio Disney favorites, pureNRG. “I want to see people rediscover the worship that Christmas songs have in them,” says Mark Hall, front man and principal songwriter for Casting Crowns. “A lot of times, when we sing carols, we sort of shift into Christmas carol mode—singing songs that we’ve been singing for so long, we might not be hearing what they’re really saying,” explains Hall.

International Supergroup Newsboys Releases Live CD/DVD

The newsboys have captured the best of their sell-out “GO” tour on the new CD/DVD project newsboys live: Houston We Are Go, releasing Sept. 30.

Filmed and recorded in Houston during the third leg of the “GO” tour this past spring, newsboys live: Houston We Are Go takes the band’s wildly successful tour and commits it to tape. “We felt on every level, this was our strongest tour to date, and we wanted to capture it,” says band member Jeff Frankenstein (keyboards).

In Finland, heavy metal music moves the masses, even in church

MAENTSAELAE, Finland (AFP) — Most teens may not get excited about church, but in Finland they go out of their way to attend in the latest testimony to the country's infatuation with heavy metal music: Metal Mass.

"It's nice that there are slightly different church services compared to the usual ones," says 15-year-old Teea Pallaskari, who skipped geography class to make the service in the plain, red-brick Lutheran Church -- the state religion -- in this small town about 60 kilometres (40 miles) north of Helsinki.

Inside, Pallaskari and her classmates squash together on packed pews, belting out hymns as a lead singer moshes wildly onstage to his band's earsplitting tones.

When the music stops, the students burst into ecstatic applause and whistles -- to smiling approval from Pastor Haka Kekaelaeinen. It's Metal Mass -- or Metallimessu -- and it's okay to be loud.

Mideast-TV Fatwa

Saudi cleric says immoral broadcasters can be killed

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) - A top Saudi cleric has issued an

edict saying it's permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV

stations that show "immoral" content.

The head of Saudi Arabia's Supreme Judicial Council later

clarified that owners should first be brought to trial and then

sentenced to death if other penalties don't deter them.

Another Saudi cleric, meanwhile, has declared that the cartoon

character Mickey Mouse should be killed because under Islamic law,

rats and mice are considered "repulsive" and "soldiers of

Satan."
